'An Eagle uses the negative energy of a storm to fly even higher" - Eric Thomas

With Eagles committee approval, I would like to share with you all and celebrate our U18 NL Eagle George Higginson and his story of 'recover and conquer'.

In November 2024, George was playing basketball and had an injury that caused him severe abdominal pain. He needed immediate urgent emergency treatment and was sent to the Oxford Children's Hospital.

After a series of scans and tests, it was discovered that the impact of the basketball accident had ruptured George's pancreas. Due to the complex nature of his injuries, he had to be referred to a specialist team at the Churchill Hospital before going back to the children's hospital.

George and his family's lives were totally turned upside down, and the Oxford Children's Hospital became home for the next 15 weeks.

It was during the 105 day hospital stay that Alison, Mum to George saw a poster for the OX5 RUN, a five-mile fun run around Blenheim Palace in support of the Oxford Children's Hospital.

Alison was inspired to get involved after seeing firsthand how the charity supports patients and staff in the hospital, explaining "I knew about the OX5 RUN, having taken part over 10 years ago, but it was only during our lengthy hospital stay that I truly realised how this event plays such a part in what the charity is able to do for patients and staff.

Last March, George finally recovered and went on to cheer his mum on as she crossed the finish line at the 2025 OX5 RUN event.

Nearly a year on, George has made a remarkable recovery, he has returned to playing in his National League Eagles team! And is running alongside his mum to conquer the five-mile fun run at Blenheim Palace 2026 OX5 RUN.

George said, "I wouldn't be where I am today with the freedom to live my life in the way I do, without the support of the many people who contributed to getting me better".

If you are inspired by George and mum Alison, there is still time to take part in the charity run, visit www.ox5run.com or if you would prefer to support George by way of a donation, please click on this link and help George to reach his fundraising target.

George’s fearless spirit, much like that of an eagle, is truly courageous. With a “never give up” mindset and a powerful inner strength that allows him to soar above the chaos this storm brought into his life.

His former Eagles Coach, Stuart added, “We are incredibly proud of George. He is an inspiration to us all, especially as he takes on a new challenge and, as always, strives to continue lifting those around him.”

Go GEORGE! We could not be prouder!
