U16 National League

Looking ahead to the National League Celebration Evening on Saturday, May 7th at Abingdon Rugby Club, here's Coach Andy Sellick's roundup.

Don't forget if you were a U16 National League player this season, you can now purchase your 'National League, Celebration Evening' tickets £5 per person from our Pitchero shop.

Wow - what a year for the U16 NL team. Some absolutely amazing highs, and some lows, but hey you don't get to the top without a few obstacles to make you stronger!

This is a team with huge potential, loads of passion and when we are cooking on gas we are unstoppable!, as was demonstrated a number times this season.

We all know that Covid has caused a number of challenges and trying to build a team ethos and game plan has been difficult when attendance gets impacted, at some games we only had 6 or 7. That said, as the season progressed our team spirit, skills and match play continued to improve. We are a fast, physical team that puts up a great defence. As we played more and more as a team our offence did improve and we learnt to move the ball, create space and ultimately be more patient to create the right shooting opportunities.

There are two real highlights of the season for me. The first would be our game against Bedford. This was an absolutely fantastic performance from the team, we did all the basics incredibly well - great passing, strong defence, patience on the offence and ultimately real grit, determination and focus to beat the 3rd seeded team 103 - 100. What a game! The other game was our final match of the season against Hoops. Hoops ultimately finished second in the league, yet with only 7 players we really took the game to them with some beautiful passing basketball and again strong defence against a full Hoops squad of 12. Their coach even complemented us on what great game we played.

We ended the season a really credible 7th in the league with lots of development for both the team and individual players. I would just like to thank everyone for their support. We enter our U18 season with strong core of players who can create phenomenal basketball in the season that lies ahead of us.

See you at training…
