6. Code of Conduct

Members/players/coaches are expected to:

  • Play within the rules and respect each other, officials and their decisions;
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of age, gender, ability, race, cultural background, religious beliefs or sexual identity;
  • Use facilities hired with due care and respect;
  • Keep to agreed timings for training and competitions, or inform their coach if they are going to be late;
  • Wear suitable kit for training and match sessions;
  • Coaches are required to meet the high standards of quality and the duty of care prescribed by Basketball England. Coaches are also required to be qualified/certified with Basketball England and are also expected to undertake courses each year to comply with Basketball England recommendations relating to first aid and child protection.

Parents and guardians are expected to:

  • Encourage their child to learn the rules of basketball and play within them with respect for coaches, players, supporters and other parties;
  • Discourage unfair play and arguing with officials;
  • Help their child to recognise good performance, not just short term results;
  • Never force their child to take part in sport;
  • Set a good example by recognising fair play and applauding the good performances of all;
  • Never punish or belittle a child for losing or making mistakes;
  • Publicly accept judgements made by officials;
  • Support their child’s involvement and help them to enjoy their sport;
  • Use correct and proper language at all times and at the right tone/volume;
  • Allow their child to play in the age development stage that is appropriate to them. This will ensure they enjoy playing the game, develop their skills and gain confidence;
  • Respect the coaches’ decisions on playing time and our ability/experience to balance equal playing time for all against other important factors (such as the type of league/competition, matching the physicality of other teams, impact on team morale, rewarding players for effort and discipline etc.).
